This review paper discusses technical details and features of various types of energy storage systems and their capabilities of integration into the power grid. An analysis of various energy storage systems being utilized in the power grid is also presented.
Under some conditions, excess renewable energy is produced and, without storage, is curtailed 2, 3; under others, demand is greater than generation from renewables. Grid-scale energy-storage (GSES) systems are therefore needed to store excess renewable energy to be released on demand, when power generation is insufficient 4.
The direct current generated by the batteries is processed in a power-conversion system or bidirectional inverter to output alternating current and deliver to the grid. At the same time, the battery energy storage systems can store power from the grid when necessary 24, 25.
The rise in renewable energy utilization is increasing demand for battery energy-storage technologies (BESTs). BESTs based on lithium-ion batteries are being developed and deployed. However, this technology alone does not meet all the requirements for grid-scale energy storage.
