This paper summarizes the current RE situation in Benin and examines its future prospects.
From 114 gigawatt hour (GWh) in 2010 to 1062.8 GWh in 2020, the energy output of self-producers and public power plants increased, with 810 GWh produced by public thermal power plants alone and 71.9 GWh by Benin’s portion of Nagbeto’s hydraulic production .
Although hydroelectricity, biomass and especially PV technologies play an increasingly important role in the electrification of Benin, recent studies have shown that wind energy technologies can also contribute. Non-electrified rural and peri-urban localities have favourable wind potential in coastal Benin.
