At the end of 2023, the installed PV capacity in Hungary was around 5.6 GW, after around 1.6 GW was added in 2023. Compared to 2022, this addition represented an increase of approximately 45%. Given such figures, it is not surprising that the Hungarian solar industry is optimistic about the future.
MEKH reported that the number of residential solar systems in Hungary increased from 292,000 at the end of 2024 to 309,000 by March 2025. In late 2024, MEKH announced that large-scale solar projects in Hungary were expected to reach 3.5 GW, with most of these projects being around 50 MW each.
By the second quarter of 2025, Hungary’s solar capacity is projected to exceed 8 GW. This remarkable growth is driven by extensive large-scale solar projects and the easing of restrictions on residential solar installations, as reported by the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (MEKH).
As of early November 2024, the country has achieved an impressive total solar capacity of over 5,500 megawatts (MW), underscoring the importance of solar energy for Hungary's energy future.
