In Rwanda, which is endowed with a variety of clean energy sources (i.e. hydroelectric, solar power, biogas and geothermal), around 85 percent of households rely on traditional biomass for cooking and heating needs (Ministry of Infrastructure, 2015a).
In this study, we use the Fifth round of the Integrated Household Living Conditions Survey of Rwanda (EICV5), conducted within 2016/2017 by NISR to explain household energy demand in the country. From various empirical specifications, the study reveals different energy Engel Curves of the four energy types under study.
Derive Energy Engel curves of electricity, charcoal, biomass, and others in Rwanda. Find significant gaps in energy consumption between rural and urban households. Decarbonize energy sector with affordable energy sources may reduce the biomass use.
This could be due to the fact that most Rwandan households use electricity for lighting purpose, but the number of household members is not necessarily linked to the lamps to light. Importantly, Table A1 indicates that any increase in household energy expenditures are strongly associated to increase electricity demand.
