In a historic milestone for clean energy, solar power became the leading source of electricity in the EU for the first time in June 2025. New data from energy think tank Ember reveals that solar accounted for 22.1% of the EU’s electricity mix, surpassing nuclear and leaving fossil fuels far behind.
Solar power generated 22.1% of EU electricity (45.4 TWh) in June 2025, more than any other power source. This is an increase of 22% from June 2024. In second place was nuclear with 21.8% (44.7 TWh), followed by wind with 15.8% (32.4 TWh).
At the same time, the solar sector continued to break records. At least 13 EU member states reached their highest ever share of solar electricity, including Belgium, Croatia, France, Hungary, Italy, Portugal and Slovakia. This dual trend of rising solar and falling coal highlights a pivotal shift in Europe’s energy landscape.
