Sustainable development of container terminals is based on energy efficiency and reduction in CO 2 emissions. This study estimated the energy consumption and CO 2 emissions in container terminals according to their layouts.
Ensuring availability of these electrical resources to meet loads which are intermittent and uncertain is becoming a critical port function. It requires investment in multi-vector energy supply chains, energy storage in ports and their associated energy management systems.
As a logistics hub between land and sea transportation, container terminals perform an absolutely critical function in the seaborne trade. As a result of the continuous global competition in this field, port operators are currently focusing on sustainable development of container terminals 1, 2.
Technologies such as electrification of equipment, cold-ironing, energy storage systems, smart grid, microgrid are reviewed. Renewable energy and clean fuel use in ports are presented. Methods regarding energy consumption and emission measuring/assessment are detailed for ports.
