Spain has launched an ambitious €700 million (around $796 million) program to increase its energy storage capacity. This plan will add 2.5 to 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of storage. It includes pumped hydro, thermal energy storage, and battery systems.
Additionally, Spain is strengthening policies to support the growth of energy storage. The country aims to deploy 22 GW of energy storage by 2030 and 50 GW by 2050. Currently, the total installed capacity of energy storage in Spain—covering planned, under-construction, and completed projects—stands at about 20 GW.
Developers have pledged €1.99 billion in total investment for 144 projects representing 2.61 GW and 11.14 GWh of capacity. Battery energy storage systems accounted for 124 of the selected projects, while 17 involved thermal or power-to-heat storage and three were pumped hydro sites.
