Output signal (voltage/current) Once the specifications for the measurement system have been defined, the sensor technology that can be used for current measurement will be determined. Perhaps the most important specification to consider is the purpose of the measurement; this will often set the rest of the speciications.
This precision design introduces a direct high voltage measurement method for battery packs in the automotive application. The high voltage common mode output of the battery stack is eliminated by creating isolated power supplies using the same common mode voltage.
Measuring current at the high-side of the load, or directly in series with the power rail being monitored and the remainder of the circuit, avoids both the varying system reference and alternate short-circuit path issues of low-side current measurements.
Low-side shunt-based current measurements are common for monitoring a battery pack’s charge and discharge currents in a BMS. However, one of the challenges of shunt-based measurements is how to handle thermal dissipation across the shunt.
