India had 469,000 5G base stations at the end of February, according to the latest available figures from the country’s Ministry of Communications. The ministry said the number of active 5G subscribers in the country surpassed 250 million in the period – in less than two and a half years since 5G was commercially launched.

Significantly, in India the 5G services are being offered by only two telecom operators- Reliance Jio and Airtel. Both Jio and Airtel are planning to launch 5G Pan India by 2024. Mukesh Ambani headed Jio is also targeting to reach out to significant Indian cities by December 2023.
The rapid uptake of 5G underscores the increasing demand for high-speed connectivity and expanding digital infrastructure nationwide. The ministry revealed that 4.69 lakh (469,000) 5G base stations have been deployed nationwide as of 28 February 2025, to support the growing subscriber base.
