Island power systems, due to their geographical isolation, limited interconnectivity, and reliance on imported fuels, face unique challenges in this transition.
3.2. Energy Storage Technologies and Their Role in Island Energy Systems Energy storage is widely recognized as a crucial facilitator of high renewable energy penetration in island systems [70, 71]. This thematic area explores different storage solutions, including BESSs, hydrogen storage, PHS, and flywheels.
Centrally managed storage facilities in island power systems dominate the relevant literature. Table 4 includes the papers dealing with the centrally managed storage concept. Table S2 of the Supplementary data and Fig. 7 present additional details for the most representative ones.
Island power systems, due to their geographical isolation, limited interconnectivity, and reliance on imported fuels, face unique challenges in this transition. These systems’ vulnerability to supply–demand imbalances, voltage instability, and frequency deviations necessitates tailored strategies for achieving grid stability.
