Dakar, Senegal, 30 July, 2022 – Senegal’s Sendou Power Station has achieved a significant milestone in its ongoing rehabilitation and return to service after it recently produced a 100-megawatt load test during a sustained run at the coal-fired single unit power station that is located in Sendou, 35 kilometers south-east of Dakar.
The international tender for the Sendou power station was launched on 18 November 2005. The agreement between the Minister of Energy of Senegal and the Director General of Senelec (Société nationale d'électricité du Sénégal) on one side and Nykomb Synergetics on other side was signed on 24 January 2008 in Dakar.
Senegal’s Sendou coal-fired power station, with a capacity of 125 MW, has surpassed heavy fuel oil generators as the country’s most cost-effective source of baseload power. The project, which has been ongoing since 2007, is a regional success. It intends to enhance Senegal’s power dependability and cost through a “Build, Own, and Operate” model.
West African Energy, a Senegalese energy company, plans to open Senegal’s first and largest 300 MW combined cycle gas power station in January 2024.
