Advantages and Disadvantages of Outdoor Substations over Indoor Substations: The outdoor substations have the following main advantages over indoor substations: (i) All the equipment is within view and therefore fault location is easier. (ii) The extension of the installation is easier, if required.
Indoor substations have a closed and insulated design inside a building. Hence, they are safer than outdoor substations. Indoor substations are more reliable than outdoor substations, as they are not directly exposed to the weather conditions. Indoor substations are relatively cheaper to maintain.
However the cost of GIS indoor substation is higher compared to AIS substation but it has some benefits which include high reliability, less space requirement and less maintenance. Some of the advantages and disadvantages of outdoor switchyard are discussed below.
