The result is that today’s optical glasses are superbly uniform. For instance, Ohara’s “Grade Special A1” homogeneity is Δn ≤ 1×10 −6 in a 100 mm path, and their highest quality melts have virtually no inclusions >0.1 mm. Such glass can produce diffraction-limited lenses with no image degradation from the glass itself.
As in all other glass manufacturing processes, solar glass substrates are subject to defects during produc-tion. Depending on the defect type and intensity, the impact of these defects can range from a reduced transmission to a considerable negative influence on the mechanical glass characteristics.
Without a source for the statement, and a specification of what types of glasses it applies to, there is no good answer. If someone claimed that glass is a heterogeneous mixture instead of a homogeneous mixture, there would be ways to test that.
