Germany, in its transition to renewable energies, faces challenges in regulating its energy supply. This study investigates the impact of various technologies, including energy storage solutions, peak shaving, and virtual buffers in a smart energy grid on a large scale.
The Electric Thermal Energy Storage system can store up to 130MWh of thermal energy for a week, which can be converted back into electrical energy using a 1.4MW steam turbine generator that can produce electricity for up to 24 hours.
With this significant energy consumption, Hamburg Mitte is a good starting point to investigate the energy supply of a predominantly industrial district. It includes the Port of Hamburg, the business and residential areas at the HafenCity, and the industry at the hinterland of the seaport.
However, in this case study the storage systems reduce the overall positive deviation between demand and supply by 7.15%. The underproduction is also reduced by 7.13%. Therefore, the storage systems affect the overall deviation in Hamburg Mitte. However, this improvement is not enough to sustainably use renewable energies in the future.
