Technologies such as electrification of equipment, cold-ironing, energy storage systems, smart grid, microgrid are reviewed. Renewable energy and clean fuel use in ports are presented. Methods regarding energy consumption and emission measuring/assessment are detailed for ports.
In 2020, Song et al. proposed an integrated port energy system that converts excess electricity into natural gas for storage. In contrast, the PIMES system discussed in this paper stores surplus electricity in the form of hydrogen. Pu et al. introduced a port integrated energy system that uses natural gas for power generation.
Lastly, solar energy provides increased energy independence and resilience. Ports and ships equipped with solar power systems have a more reliable and stable energy supply, ensuring uninterrupted operations. Solar energy can be seamlessly integrated into various aspects of port infrastructure.
