As of 31 July 2019, the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) had issued more than 77 power generation licences with 42 being solar power projects. A number of IPPs are already selling electricity to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) and feeding into the national grid.
Interest in investing in Zimbabwe’s solar power market is on the rise as the Ministry approves 39 solar PV projects for development. The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (Zera) has processed 39 solar power projects that have capacity to generate up 1,151.87MW, as the country moves towards renewable energy to increase capacity.
In Zimbabwe, in partnership with the government and the Global Fund, UNDP has equipped 405 health facilities with solar systems to strengthen national systems for health. “We are targeting four priority areas” explained Pfungwa Mukweza, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, UNDP Zimbabwe.
In Zimbabwe, the cost of solar panels varies among distributors. Good solar panels ranging from 300W to 400W typically cost between $120 and $160, with an average price of $140. Canadian solar panels are the most popular and commonly purchased.
