However, many promising energy storage technologies remain immature, necessitating focused attention from both academia and industry. To effectively guide future research efforts, it is crucial to assess the current state of research: identifying the topics that are being studied, recognizing the gaps, and understanding the trends.
The rise in renewable energy utilization is increasing demand for battery energy-storage technologies (BESTs). BESTs based on lithium-ion batteries are being developed and deployed. However, this technology alone does not meet all the requirements for grid-scale energy storage.
BESTs are increasingly deployed, so critical challenges with respect to safety, cost, lifetime, end-of-life management and temperature adaptability need to be addressed. Energy-storage technologies are needed to support electrical grids as the penetration of renewables increases.
Although energy storage technologies still face certain challenges in terms of cost, efficiency, and large-scale application, with ongoing research and development and increased policy support, the future development prospects of energy storage technologies are vast.
