Average Installed Cost per kWh in 2025 In today’s market, the installed cost of a commercial lithium battery energy storage system — including the battery pack, Battery Management System (BMS), Power Conversion System (PCS), and installation — typically ranges from: $280 to $580 per kWh for small to medium-sized commercial projects.
Battery storage prices have gone down a lot since 2010. In 2025, they are about $200–$400 per kWh. This is because of new lithium battery chemistries. Different places have different energy storage costs. China’s average is $101 per kWh. The US average is $236 per kWh. Knowing the price of energy storage systems helps people plan for steady power.
This study shows that battery electricity storage systems offer enormous deployment and cost-reduction potential. By 2030, total installed costs could fall between 50% and 60% (and battery cell costs by even more), driven by optimisation of manufacturing facilities, combined with better combinations and reduced use of materials.
Annual operational costs for utility scale battery storage projects are typically low – around 2% of capex. We assume 2%, equivalent to $2.5/kWh/year, which covers routine maintenance, monitoring and performance guarantees, but excludes augmentation or extended warranties.
